One of the best sellers of 1999, Goldeneye was the game that sold the N64. With its astonishing first person graphics and unique gameplay to a console system, it paved the way for the multi-player first person shooter.
The graphics in Goldeneye really show off what the N64 was originally capable of doing. The Terrains were well detailed and well laid out to give you a feel for what it would like to be a British spy. The characters, although flat faced, looked like the characters from the movie. The only thing missing was the full motion video cut-scenes in the movie.
Music and sound also lead the way in this game. Sound effects from the guns and footsteps added to a players experience along with the almost somewhat haunting music for some levels. The sound and music helped to bring a player into the urgency or darkness of the situation.
The gameplay is where this game was most successful. There are over 20 different levels to explore, each with multiple levels of difficulty. The harder the difficulty, the more objectives and less time you had to do them in. The multiplier was also a key selling point of this game. Allowing up to four people to play at once, you could play your friends to figure out who truly is the best spy. Goldeneye also avoided excessive gore, unlike Doom and Duke Nuke'm, allowing it to get the Teen rating.
Goldeneye was not a million seller for no reason. With its great multi-player and amazing gameplay, this game is a must own for any N64 fan over the age of 13, maybe even a mature 12 year old.
