Recommendations: Good Game!
Final Fantasy 5 is a unique version of the age-old FF series. The usual RPG elements with a battle system twist that makes for some good, childish, silly fun.
Storyline: 86 I gave this storyline a marginally good score because, yet again, we start with the simple beginnings and end with this huge, mind-boggling, cataclysmic event where your main character(s) are something much more than they made out to be. Another reason for the lower mark is the predictableness of it all. "Oh no, we can't use this yet." Well, you as the player probably already know where it's supposed to be used, which makes it kinda boring.
Battle System: 97.5 Wow. Though the usual "I stand here, you stand there, and we take turns beating each other" battle system, it has a phenominal twist of the Job system, the system that gave rise to the FF Tactics system. This is quite possibly the coolest system I have yet to run across in an RPG-the ability to control COMPLETELY how your guys grow. Want this one to be a spell-caster? Then make them a wizard or priest or something similar. How abaout a fighter? Well, thats simple, make them a Knight or a Samurai(yes, SAMURAI). Complete control! What a novel idea... It should be used more often(*hint HINT*)...
Replayability: 75 One problem with this game-no replayability. Once you go through it once, where most of what will happen is already predictable, the second time is completely known, making it extremely boring, unless you give yourself years in-between plays. One redeeming factor to the replayability is the job system. The ability to customize your guy as you see fit does make it kinda fun to go through again.
Graphics: 85 Yes, still the old large pixel look, but for the time, it was still pretty good-looking. Nowadays you look at it and really can't help but like the simpleness of it.
Sound: 60 Oh god. This is not cool. A midi-mix-up in which the midi's are BEYOND annoying. Though I hate to do it, even I can't stand this horrible repetative noise. The worst is when you get to a part in the storyline where they want you to go really fast or die, and that horrible music kicks in, the music it repeats about every 20 seconds and is annoying to begin with. Grrrr...
Overall: 93.5 While certainly not one of their best, the game is still fun to play, at least the first time around. The really cool factor in this game, however, is the Job system, which I thiink should be in every game. That make the game worth playing at least once, possibly twice.
Should you get this game: To tell you the truth, thats really your choice. If you think you can stand a lot of annoying midi's and keep going, even though you probably know what is going to happen, then yeah, get the game. Bu if your the type that needs to be shocked all the time, then stay away from this game unless your a collector. The job system does make it worth getting, though. If you really want, just get the Final Fantasy Anthologies for PSX. That comes with both this game and the awesome FF6, one of my favorite games ever. (Click Here for the review of FF6)
